At Orpierre the most athletic climbers can tackle vertiginous cliffs culminating at an altitude of 1,200 m. Mountaineers can climb the Barre des Écrins Mountain, the highest peak in the department. In summer, on the lakes of Lauvitel, Lauzon and Serre Poncon there’s a wide choice of water sports and on the Durance River, kayakers and rafters can enjoy an exhilarating descent.The Hautes-Alpes boasts 1,536 kilometres of slopes: the ski resorts are served by 367 ski lifts. As well as the big name ski resorts in Hautes-Alpes,such as Serre Chevalier – Briançon/Chantemerle/Villeneuve-la-Salle/Le Monêtier-les-Bains you have a multitude of small and family friendly places like Les Orres, Réallon, Crevoux, Ceillac and more.The largest ski resorts offer up to 400 kilometres of slopes (Via Lattea – Sestriere/Sauze d’Oulx/San Sicario/Claviere/Montgenèvre). The highest ski resorts for skiing in Hautes-Alpes extend up to 3,534 metres (La Grave – La Meije).For those who are not sport-minded, there are many typical villages to discover: Saint-Véran, Embrun, Mont-Dauphin, etc. The department has a fabulous heritage and some of the most beautiful treasures of sacred art in France.
