The family orientated ski resort of Avoriaz was created in response to the need for skiing at a higher altitude. In 1960 Jean Vuarnet became the resort director and his job was to develop Avoriaz, architecturally designed this purpose built ski resort sprung up from the mountain, its design like jagged rocks rising from the snow to create a visually stimulating resort that was in harmony with the nature that surrounded it. At a higher altitude than neighbouring Morzine and rising to 1800 metres above sea level, it was the decisive move that lead to the creation of the Portes du Soleil to which it is linked. An entirely car-free resort, sleighs replace cars and skiers, ski right to their door. Children are pulled around in sledges and the numerous bars and terrace cafes offer the chance to soak up the sun and enjoy a drink and a meal. With fast lifts and good snow reliability, this is the jewel in the crown of the Portes du Soleil. It offers varied skiing for all abilities and there is a wide choice of ski schools available with a good choice of options for younger skiers.
