The Chamonix valley is one of the most well-known ski resorts in the world and was in fact the first place to host the winter Olympics back in 1924. Chamonix is not just a winter ski resort though. It has a booming summer trade and is actually busier in the summer than the winter. It attracts all sorts of sports and climbing enthusiasts. One of the main attractions of Chamonix is the iconic Mont Blanc Mountain which at 4809m is the highest mountain in western Europe. The Chamonix valley runs from Vallorcine located right next to the Swiss border, down to Servoz at the bottom of the valley towards Geneva. There are numerous little towns and villages in between which include Les Bosson, Argentiere and Les Houches. Chamonix is also very well located in central Europe, making it a favourite destination resort for all sorts of people. Just 1 hour from Geneva, 2 hours from Lyon and a short 20-minute drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy and the adjoining ski resort of Courmayeur. It also has something going on pretty much all year round and Chamonix itself gives the impression that its more of a city nestled in the mountains. They host many events during the year including the climbing world cup competition every summer, the Cosmo Jazz festival, the Kandahar Downhill skiing competition and of course the world-renowned Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.
