Perched on its piton, Mizoën marks the gateway to the Ferrand Valley. This beautiful flower-filled village is typical of the Oisans and enjoys a magnificent, panoramic view over the Lac du Chambon, La Meije, the Romanche gorges and right up to the Taillefer ridge. This is an area of agricultural traditions, with its bread oven, ecomuseum at Les Clôts, age-old paths dotted with oratories and inscriptions on ancient rocks. The village offers leisure facilities, including a spacious recreation room, children’s playground and games area, together with a multitude of sports activities in the surrounding area; hiking, cycling and mountain biking, horse riding, paragliding, skiing, snowshoeing and mountaineering. Outside the village, you are immediately in the open countryside, with paths leading up to well-known sites, such as the Emparis plateau, with its clear lakes reflecting the glaciers. For those interested in local heritage, the village, together with the hamlets of Aymes and Singuigneret, feature typical examples of local architecture. Mizoën, meaning “au midi”, bathes in sunshine on its promontory. The village was originally positioned on the edge of the Romanche gorge and research has revealed that it stood on a Roman road between Grenoble and Briançon. As this was a strategic passage for crossing the Alps, Mizoën had a population of up to 680 in 1846. Below the village, two hamlets of Mont-de-Lans were swallowed up by the Chambon dam, built between 1926 and 1935. The water of this lake adds charm to this previously deep and narrow valley.
Les Deux Alpes Ski Area
Les Deux-Alpes is a vibrant ski resort both in the summer and winter, famous for its glacier skiing in winter and downhill mountain biking in summer.
The town is long and narrow, sitting on a high col and has an outdoor ice rink, many shops and restaurants and a huge selection of bars and nightclubs.
The ski area is high, snow-sure and has varied slopes, including the extensive glacier with guaranteed snow quality. There is lots of good off-piste terrain with stunning views of the Ecrins National Park’s high southern peaks. It has one of the largest skiable glaciers in Europe open from late June until the end of August. It also has one of the biggest snow-parks. There are lots of summer training camps for skiers and boarders. You can ski here for nearly 8 full months of the year. It opened on the 16 June this year (2016) with 40 cm of Fresh powder on the glacier! It also opens for a week in October for the 'toussaints' holiday. The french team are training here at the moment.
We have split the area into the 4 different resorts: Deux Alpes 1350, Deux Alpes 1650, Venosc and Mont de Lans.
Regular bus services make transfers cheap and easy from both Grenoble airport and train station.
