The entrance to the private property is through a huge solid wooden gate with a built in drop letter box and a traditional old-fashioned hanging bell for guests to announce their arrival. Crossing the threshold into the partially walled inner courtyard feels as if you stepped into another time. There is a beautiful multi level garden with separate areas, each with its own personality and ambiance.
Before we go inside the manor house, let me take you on a private tour of the grounds… The upper level garden has a more formal layout and is surrounded by trees, bushes and low stone walls. A circular walkway leads you from the private parking area around the garden edges & through to the formal entrance to the house & to where we just stepped through the huge wooden gates. Down a few steps on your left is a traditional deep stone basin with running water where the washing was done in days gone by. Nowadays it is more commonly used for children to play in on hot summer days or for washing the dog &/or sports equipment, etc…
On the right, in the lower garden, is a lovely sunken pond with a water fountain & tucked behind the outbuilding is a discrete corner garden where to hide the compost heap & garden off cuts for burning. The “outbuilding” actually has wooden lattice for 1 of it’s walls, an earth floor & a weather proof slate roof. Below the formal garden and to our left, is a small orchard with fruit bearing trees. On the lower garden level next to the sunken pond and covered by the huge wooden terrace above is a perfect place to stockpile wood for the winters, all your sports equipment, et cetera.
Underneath the house are three large storage cellars with vaulted ceilings, stone walls and earth & concrete floors. One area is designed for wine & cheese storage where it naturally keeps a constant temperature year round. Now lets go back up to the house…
Ground floor level: The formal entrance door has vintage double windows that can open individually to allow the circulation of air. The entrance hall is wide and spacious with a seating area to pull your shoes off and on. At the end of the hall overlooking the garden there is a window and sitting area under the stairs. There is a bathroom off the entrance hall with a small separate WC with wash basin and small window. There is a separate kitchen with windows overlooking the street which have electric shutters. As you enter the kitchen, the focal point is a beautiful antique but working auger that just needs to be hooked up, the piping is in place. There is a 4 plaque mix induction/halogen cooker, a small oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and a deep double sink. The formal dining room or reception area can be accessed directly from the kitchen or via the large hallway. There is a small open fireplace with a fixed protection grill and a fitted air vent at the bottom that can be regulated to fuel the fire. You have direct access to a huge covered terrace that overlooks the private garden and mountain views. In fact each level has an identical covered terrace which is approximately 6.5 m by 2.7 m with spacious closet storage at one end plus each terrace has electricity outside.
Upstairs on the first level, there is one huge bedroom with a reversible air-conditioning /heating plus a small open fireplace with a separate conduit inside the chimney. There is a huge ensuite bathroom with a cast-iron freestanding bath tub, beautiful shower, a WC with a ½ privacy wall and an old fashion freestanding vanity sink with wall hung mirror & heated towel rail. The bathroom is light & airy with a nice relaxing sitting area and a built in connection for wiring up your own stereo system. There is a closet that hides the full size sit on top washer and dryer. From the bathroom you have direct access to a walk through built in dressing room complete with shelves, drawers, hanging rails, window & radiator and then direct access to the hallway.
Upstairs on the second level there is 1 large sunken bedroom & a full separate bathroom with corner shower, double sink, WC, heated towel rail and window. The huge office has a small open fireplace & built in wall to wall floor to ceiling bookshelves with glass doors and cupboards below along the far wall. There is an interconnecting door between the office and the sunken bedroom.
The third level top floor living area has been converted under the roof eves with huge windows plus skylights that are equipped with solar panelled electric shutters. The views are fantastic! There is a reversible air-conditioning /heating unit and a fantastic small freestanding cast-iron wood burner stove. The ‘pièce de résistance’ is the ½ sunken 5 place Jacuzzi with its own private sitting area and a separate WC.
Bozel has a population 2,000 and growing quickly. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains interspersed with deep rich forest and fragrant Alpine meadows. Bozel has a river fed lake for swimming, paddle boats, Sup boards and fly fishing, there is an abundance of natural beauty as well as access to some of the best skiing in Europe. The Courchevel le Praz ski lift that carries you into the 3 Valleys ski resort is less than 9 km away plus there is a free ski bus service runs every hour from early in the morning until 20h30 in the evenings! The village life is tranquil yet offers plenty of variety and entertainment.
There is a great selection of shops in Bozel, including a couple of small supermarkets, general shops, arts and craft shops, clothing stores including 2 specialist sportswear shops where you can rent all the equipment you need for all the activities winter and summer. Bozel has a small but very well equipped medical centre, osteopaths and physiotherapists, podiatrist, dentist that is very well equipped for surgery as well, optician, pharmacy, veterinary, church, school, post office, library, 2 banks, 3 garages, 3 hairdressers, driving school, fire department and rescue. There are multiple children's play parks, 3 tennis courts, football pitch, skate board park, several public barbecues scattered in the woods near the recreational area and paragliding landing field. There is a beautiful camping nestled in the forest beside the river with a sweet outdoor restaurant open during summers.
During the winters there is a free bus shuttle to and from the Courchevel ski resort that runs approximately every hour, free cross country ski tracks that take you around the lake, along the river and exploring up into the forest, and don't forget the snowshoeing. There is alpine skiing, ice climbing, ice skating all within 15-30 minutes of Bozel plus a very well equipped fitness centre with sauna & steam room and several public indoor swimming pools and one outdoor pool all serviced by free public transportation. The spring and summers are wonderful. Hiking, cycling, mountain biking, parenting, via ferrets, climbing, swimming, rafting, golfing and the list goes on! During peak season there is a free shuttle service. The 4 closest airports to Bozel are Lyon, Grenoble and Geneva, all about 180 km and Chambéry airport is only 100 km away. Chambéry airport services Flybe and Jet2; Lyon airport, Air France, Bmi baby, BA & EasyJet; Geneva airport, BA, EasyJet, Flybe, Jet2 & Air Lingus; and Grenoble airport, Ryanair & EasyJet. The closest train station to the 3 valleys is in Moûtiers, which is 14km from Bozel. There is regular seasonal bus transportation to and from Moutiers and of course the free bus service to Courchevel.
Three Valleys Ski Area
A beautiful place all year with highly defined seasons and quiet and tranquil out of the ski season when the crowds have gone home, and then suddenly once again each winter the mountains of the Three Valleys come alive with people enjoying this vast ski area..... the largest linked skiing in the world.
The Three Valleys ski domain provides more than 600km of runs and probably the same again off-piste. In fact it should now be called the Four Valleys with the link into Orelle (Maurienne Valley) which can be accessed by ski from Val Thorens. This has also opened up some extraordinary off-piste runs. The Three Valleys provides direct links between the ski resorts of St Martin de Belleville, Les Menuires, Val Thorens, Méribel, Mottaret, La Tania, Brides les Bains and the four Courchevel resorts, la Praz, 1550, 1650 and the world famous 1850 – and now Orelle, in the fourth valley - all under one ski pass offering on-piste skiing from 1300m all the way up to 3200m. As these figures show the Three Valleys ski area offers huge altitude differences favouring long run skiing.
It has an ultra efficient, state of the art ski lift system, quality piste preparation and a dense artificial snow making system (1920 snow cannons) complementing the excellent natural snow cover. However, if you are not a fan of downhill skiing or like some variety during your stay then you can also roam the domain at your leisure on foot, hiking along the marked trails, or using the pedestrian ski lift passes. Many trails have been created especially to enjoy the increasingly popular snowshoeing sport and to discover the valleys from a new perspective: flora, wildlife, monuments, and spectacular scenery.There are also many cross-country skiing tracks that are prepared and maintained each day. These allow you to take in the breathtaking scenery and provide the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the mountains away from the pistes.
An interesting and wonderful area all year round, there is much more here than the snow sports.
Bozel - Courchevel Ski Resort
Bozel is a beautiful town which gets a lot of sunshine all year round. It is predominantly French but there are a few English locals too who tend to be well integrated into the local community, with kids in the school. Bozel thrives in winter and in summer. Just 10 minutes by car from Moutiers (where trains arrive from London, Paris, Lyon...), 10 minutes drive from the ski lifts in Courchevel le Praz, and just 8 minute drive from Champagny/la Plagne, you have the pick of several ski resorts in winter time! Most notably Bozel is also on the free ski bus route to Courchevel.
In summer Bozel attracts many people who come to the area to walk, bike and climb or just relax by the lake and enjoy the French way of life. Bozel has everything you need - shops selling local produce, a butcher, a beautiful church with its unusual spire, beautiful views of the Grand Bec, walks from the doorstep, bars and restuarants. Its a great place to consider buying as you can get a lot more for your money here than you can further up the mountain, although people are now wising up and it is expected prices will start to rise soon.
