St-Nicolas-la-Chapelle is a classic Savoyard village that sits serenely in a spectacular setting towards the south of the Val d’Arly. The traditional chalets and quaint farmhouses of this friendly community are scattered peacefully across gentle south-facing slopes with panoramic views over the Beaufortain mountains toward Mont Blanc itself. Village amenities include a couple of traditional restaurants, a grocery store, a primary school and the magnificent baroque church. Further shops and other services are available in Flumet, just a short drive away.

The closest lifts of the Espace Diamant ski area are 3.5km from the village with a free skibus during the winter season. This dynamic ski area offers 192km of pistes to suit skiers of all levels.
During spring, summer and autumn, the area offers outstanding hiking, road cycling, mountain biking and many other outdoor activities.

Ski Area: Espace Diamant

This newly completed ski area is a hit. It brings together some of the prettiest ski resorts in the Alps, and when you’re floating around on the super light snow found in the area there is one word that sums up the experience of skiing this domain – scenery – it’s really pretty, it’s really stunning. For much of the skiing you are under the watchful eye of Mont Blanc the highest peak in Western Europe, which provides a sensational backdrop to any activity. The snow record for this area is exemplary and opens from mid Dec to late April in spite of being a relatively low area; they call it the Mont Blanc effect. Snow seems to fall here when surrounding resorts are not being so lucky and many a time I’ve been over to find fresh thigh deep powder when all around are praying for snow. It is made up of five resorts; Crest Voland Cohennoz, Flumet, Hautluce, Notre-dame de Bellecombe, Praz sur Arly and Les Saisies and most of these resorts have their own satellite villages and resorts such as Bisanne 1500 which, whilst it has its own lifts, is classified as part of Les Saisies. The Espace Diamant has 185kms of marked piste; 31 green runs, 59 blues, 47 red and 11 black, so something for everyone and in addition 4 bordercross trails and 3 snowparks add to the ensemble. Because of the newness of the area the lift system is good and efficient. This whole area is extremely good for families; it is not for the full on party animals but there is a pleasant vibe in these resorts. In the summer the place is absolutely stunning; incredible vistas and flower meadows take the breath away and it is a great place for all types of mountain adventures whether of the gourmet, relaxing kind or full on adrenalin kind!

Ski Resort: Les Saisies

Les Saisies is a stunning ski resort sitting at 1650m in an ideal location between two magnificent areas of Savoie. Lying between two valleys, the Beaufortain and the Val d'Arly, les Saisies is a ski area with breathtaking panoramic views of Mont Blanc which will catch your eye at every turn.   It is also well located from a travel point of view just 30 km from Albertville and about 1hr30 from Geneva airport. In winter, Les Saisies has one of the best snowfall and sunshine records in the Alps. In addition it is part of the Espace Diamant ski area which covers 185 km of slopes and includes 5 resorts: Les Saisies, Crest Volant Cohennoz, Notre Dame de Bellecombe, Flumet and Praz sur Arly.   There is skiing for all and les Saisies is very suited to family skiing. There are lots of powder fields about, which once you get to know the resort, you can hunt out when new snow falls. This is a very welcoming village with traditional wood and stone architecture that in the main blends well with the mountain scenery.   The village is lovely, in particular I like to stop at the boulangerie/patisserie as they really do know how to bake crowd pleasers – the myrtille and almond tarts are fabulous! The village and the resort is aimed at the family skiers and young groups that come to enjoy their skiing, like to socialise but aren’t needful of wild partying.   This resort is about skiing so the evenings are based around good meals, good conversation, having a few drinks then collapsing into bed ready to make the most of your ski day. Of course they have live music and there are bar that keep rocking until the early hours but overall that is not its focus.   There are extensive cross-country ski areas and a wide range of other activities (snowmobiling, paragliding, snowshoeing, torchlight descents, snowkarting, cinema, etc). I like this resort but it is not well known amongst the British which means prices are sensible and properties are more affordable and it has retained its authentic French feel.
